“The Gem of the Golden Waters”

Even with the power and prestige of the Topaz Throne, Kull of Atlantis has become malcontent. No king should ever willingly submit themselves to unceasing trade disputes, monotonous ambassadors with little to say, or sarcastic court officials who don’t know their place. Councilor Tu has become unbearable in this regard.

Two days. The period of time bickering merchants will need to wait, as their arbiter, King Kull, has pressing matters east of Valusia. Kull rides through the city gates as a free man. The wild is the only place for a barbarian. Brule, the ambassador of the Pictlands, shares the Atlantean’s sentiments. Tu, a creature of the court, on the other hand, rides beside the men with disdain.

Will Kull and his men achieve their objectives before the city of Valusia riots under impatient Tabulators? What lurks in the dark forest near the mountain pass? Is there such a place called the Spring of Gold Waters? Collect the series to find out!

Review

Blackthorne Publishing was the king of 3-D Comics during the late 1990s, and their two-issue run of Kull 3-D helped keep the Atlantean relevant. However, in my opinion, the art and storyline in this issue are very basic compared to the Red Sonja one-shot comic book released the same year. It works for what it is, yet other indie publishers had better products to choose from. “The Gem of the Golden Waters” has some fun elements, but if you are looking for an engaging epic, look elsewhere. I give this rare gem a three out of five stars.
