“The History Of Flight – Number 13 – Jet Streams Around The World”
In the interior front cover, readers are given another installment of “Keys Of Knowledge”. In this edition Gold Key gives various examples of the air stream and jet propulsion studied throughout time. This is a nice lesson for younger kids who are into science.
“The Deadly Sea”
A large source of radiation is killing the sealife off the Atlantic coastline and the U.S. Coast Guard is powerless to stop it. With one call, they brought in the experts from Atom Valley. But can Doctor Solar and his experts be able to stop the sinister organization controlled by Nuro? They will soon find out.
“The New Atlantis”
In the future, the population will be many times larger than it is today. With growing concern about how to feed such numbers, scientists have turned to the sea for solutions. Many laboratories have begun experimenting with methods to grow and harvest plants from the seabed. In this tale, Professor Harbinger walks us through some of the solutions brought about by underwater farming. Is there a new Atlantis on the horizon?
“The Treacherous Trap”
A professor from the United Nations has just arrived at Atom Valley, and with the man’s good looks and charm, Doctor Solar is dead in the water when it comes to romance. He knows Doctor Gail Sanders has a crush on him, but ever since his accident, his radiation levels are just too high for a long term relationship with her.
As Professor Thor Neilsen works out the flaws on his de-radiation chamber experiments, Solar must watch from a distance as the G-Man subilty works on building a romantic relationship with Gail. Will it be a matter of time before Gail loses interest in her fellow coworker? Things at the valley are about to heat up as Thor Neilsen begins his work.
“The History Of Flight – Number 14 – Fireworks In Space“
Gold Key provides readers with some historic examples of attempted space flights. From Chinese Fireworks to liquid rocket fuel, man developed the technology needed quickly. It makes one think.
Reviewer Notes
Gold Key had a unique comic book with their Doctor Solar series. This was no ordinary superhero story focused on crime fighting. No, Doctor Solar had become a troubled individual forced to sacrifice his personal and professional life to hide his powers. And while other publishing companies danced around real world science and physics, Gold Key built this character around real facts. I love this stuff.
For me, as Gold Key continues to build the drama between characters, as well as reveal more about the main villain, Nuro, Doctor Solar gets better and better with each release. I give issue #4 a rock solid four out of five stars. I can see why editors like Jim Shooter fought to keep Gold Key characters alive far into the 1990s.
