My Rating
And thus the time came when the gods warred amongst themselves; blood flowed as pantheons fell to history. It was my lady’s deity who plucked her from the depths of the ocean and placed her into life once again. The earth mother, scorned by the Cimmerian god Crom, breathed new purpose into Bêlit as avatar of Hestera. If only new patience had been bestowed.
With the slaughter at the Festival of the Blameless the rebellious spellmongers lay in pieces as our sorcerer fell upon a rage. By his words Bêlit and Valeria learned of the folly. The annual celebration wrought with drink and decadence, lulled the sleeping Crom, forcing his slumber for another year. It was told to us on this day of the blademasters divine plans. An earthbound avatar is now what he seeks. I, Curt the Bard, concubine and chronicler of Bêlit, and thus Valeria, know of the child born in battle, the barbarian who seeks the riddle, and the thorn of Aquilonia. This is the age of our next adventure.
Reviewer Notes
Warning: This comic book is meant for adult audiences; parents please be advised…
Max Bemis cranks out another great issue with more backstory into Bêlit death and rebirth. There are some hints about Conan the barbarian, but I’m not 100% sure if he will show up in this series. The potential is there.
There is no Robert E. Howard reprint stories in this issue. This is fine, as his material is available in multiple formats and various locations. I recommend the anthology reprints by Penguin Random House: The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian (2003), The Bloody Crown of Conan (2004), The Conquering Sword of Conan (2005).
I’m giving Bêlit & Valeria: Sword Vs. Sorcery No.04, four out of five starts.
