“Moon of Madness, Moon of Fear!”

Frachtdorf – 1973, four American college students have taken the summer to relax in the forest hills of Bavaria. As they begin to make camp an old Gypsy woman appears before them, yet none of the teens remember her approach. A dire warning of curses and werewolves are laid at their feet. No one will survive the passing of the full moon. The young philosophy student named Kenny begged to differ.

“They Wait in Their… Dungeon!”

A riot has broken out at the infamous seaside prison coined Drury’s Dungeon by the national press. Inside, the warden has fled deep inside the underground passages once home to some of the worst atrocities known in modern prisoner reform. As gangs of roving malcontents search further and further into the complex, the man who orchestrated his own demise waits for rescue.

“Delusion for a Dragon Slayer!”

Warren had been late for work many times before, but today was unacceptable. The big meeting at corporate will determine the company’s financial outlook for the next six years. As he scrambled through a nearby construction site in his neighborhood, Warren would meet his fate at the end of a faulty wrecking ball.

Then he awoke to bright sunlight and roaring ocean waves filling his ears. Where was he, and where were his clothes? Warren scanned his body to find his obese form replaced by tanned skin and muscles galore. What the hell was going on? Was this a dream?

Before Warren could comprehend why he was standing on an ancient rowing ship, a Mariner dressed in a white linen tunic called out to him for orders. Someway, somehow, Warren Glazer Griffin had become captain of this ship.

Review

In 1973, Marvel Comics continued to chase the horror anthology market under Roy Thomas’ leadership. With the introduction of the series Chamber of Chills, Thomas returns to the horror/fantasy format beloved by millions during the pulp fiction era. The only question is, would modern comic book readers enjoy the format?

You already know my dislike for anthology storytelling, if you have been following my reviews. I will say, however, that the Moon of Madness, Moon of Fear plot was very reminiscent of future horror movies The Howling (1981) and An American Werewolf In London (1981). Elements from both movies are eerily similar to this comic. I wonder if this book inspired the writers of both films? In any case, this comic gets a solid three-star review from this horror nerd.
