“The Blood of the Unicorn”

Andar of Bezfarda was a young boy when he first caught a glimpse of one. The sleek white body of a horse. The tail of a lion. And the horn. What a magnificent creature, the unicorn.

Andar wanted so much to touch the snow-white mane. But the unicorn sprinted off into the Argossean Forest before the boy could reach its position. A tear came to his eye. Andar made a pact with himself that day. He shall handle a unicorn even if it means killing one.

Thirty years would pass and Andar grew into a powerful sorcerer. From the walls of Bezfarda his Acolytes would search until a new specimen was found. That day is today! Andar and his men begin to close ranks on a unicorn near the borderlands.

What the Argossean hunters failed to notice was the fiery redhead watching the scene from above. Red Sonja readied herself to strike those who would assault such innocence. By the Beard of Mitra, this creature will go unmolested!

Review

By 1977, the Marvel Comics version of Red Sonja had earned her place in the hearts of fans. With Roy Thomas and Frank Thorne behind the project, the She-Devil with a Sword would receive her first solo title. Who needs Conan anyway?

This is an amazing first issue. The artwork by Frank Thorne alone is enough to buy a copy of this comic book. Roy Thomas has also become synonymous with the Robert E Howard brand. There is no one better at writing Hyborian Age tales other than Robert E Howard. We’ll, maybe Jim Zub. It doesn’t matter, this was a fun book to read. I give it four out of five stars.
