“The Tempest”

The fists came hard and fast towards the pilot. His attacker claimed this was a rescue. It matter little. If the brotherhood discovered any of the drugs aboard were confiscated from the downed airplane it would mean certain death. The masked stranger dodged out of the firing arch of the crew, their sight impaired by the smoke rolling out of the fuselage. Then purple knuckles landed on the jaw of the captain, despite the situation. Darkness quickly filled the minds of both survivors.

The next day a beautiful young dame stood over Kit Walker with gauze pads and a bottle of iodine. His ordeal in the Bandar region of the African jungle had not gone as smoothly as expected. The good news is no stitches are required. Diana Palmer, disapproved of the Phantom’s operation. The “Living Ghost” may claim to be immortal, but a rational-minded woman knows differently. Nevertheless, Kit would maintain his rugged good looks. Later that evening Diana would learn the full details of the Phantom’s latest adventure.

Review

Lee Falk’s time-tested character has returned in this brand-new series from Mad Cave. The Phantom first appeared in publication in 1936 and has resurfaced over the past ninety years in print, radio, television, as well as the big screen. I’m thrilled to see the Phantom back with his own title once again. Mad Cave has done their research on this character, as all the elements from the original series are here (minus the time period). I may be mistaken, but the story appears to be set in the Vietnam era. I guess we will find out in issue two. For this introduction, writer Ray Fawkes and artist Russell Olson do a bang-up job on this product. My hats off to them. I give this issue of The Phantom four out of five stars.
