Starro the Conqueror
During his daily patrol in the waters off of the Atlantic coast, Aquaman is intercepted by one of his finned allies. A pufferfish named Peter informs him of an alien lifeform which fell from the stars and crashed onto the waters nearby. The creature was enormous with a shape resembling that of Earth’s starfish species. Before Peter could escape, his fish eyes witnessed the alien transform multiple terrestrial starfish into duplicates of itself.
Aquaman’s curiosity turn to fear as his friend revealed the final piece of the story. The creature was able to send out hypnotic signals to all surrounding aquatic life. The words “I am Starro, I hear to conquer your planet” was spoken. Aquaman thanked his friend and began to swim towards the shoreline. It’s time to activate the Justice League of America!
Can the mighty Justice League tackle an invasion of mind controlling starfish from outer space? What is the secret behind Snapper’s immunity? Will Batman find his two nemesis before they spend all the money? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
I bought this facsimile recently because of Starro’s appearance in the Suicide Squad 2 movie. I liked the 2021 film, so I wanted to read the source material. I’m not sure if there are more appearances of Starro in the comic books, but since this was released in 1960 I tried to read this with an open mind.
The target demo for this is either young children, or Gardner Fox was out of touch with his audience by about twenty years. The main reason I could never get into reading DC Comic books is the over simplistic way their heroes always win. I read the Brave and the Bold number 147 from 1979 this summer. Nineteen years after Starro invaded Earth, DC writers were still giving their heroes ridiculously easy solutions to every single problem they faced.
I’m not going to pick apart each individual character or their powers as the characters have changed over the decades. I would point out one thing. How is Aquaman flying to the desert location at the end? They picture him in a funnel of water, in the air.
The book is split up into individual stories and one group finale at the end. The only story that interested me was the Flash plot line. The other parts were just dumb down garbage. I don’t want to do this, but I have to. I’m giving this facsimile two out of five stars. Sorry Starro, hope to see you in a sequel movie.
