The Dark Wars – Part 01 of 04
Mindless In Manhattan
September 1990 – a late evening thunderstorm moves over the New York city skyline, dumping several inches of unwanted rain on an unprepared Manhattan. Two of the water logged pedestrians have just arrived at the Memorial Metaphysical Institute building. Stephen Strange holds one of the outer doors open for Sara Wolfe. As they ride the elevator up several floors the two discuss the recent dealings with voodoo queen Marie Laveau, and the chapter in Morgana’s new book about Doctor Strange. The woman was not kind in her words.
As the two review recent video footage taken of a potential ESP powered test subject, a large beam of energy crashes through the plate glass window across the office suite where they sit. Stephen and Sara both rush over to the smashed window to see where the attack came from. Just above street level a large black portal has been opened and several dozen black creatures covered in a rocky skin start to pour out. Stephen recognizes these monstrosities immediately. Mindless ones!
With a simple flick of his fingers Steven Strange’s business suit is replaced with the robes and cloak of the Sorcerer Supreme. He yells to Sara to alert Wong and Rintrah of the breach between Earth and the Dark Dimension. Strange turns his attention back to the mayhem on the street below. He jumps out the high-rise window and begins to sore down towards the monster’s.
With the portal open to the Dark Dimension will Stephen be able to contact his lover Clea? Can Baron Mordo convince Sara Wolfe to free him from his prison underneath the Sanctum Santorum? Why does Rintrah choose to travel around robe less?

Reviewer Notes
I recently finished the 2022 Midnight Suns miniseries and my favorite part was the battle with the G’uranthic Guardian. That gigantic sized monster is pure awesome-sauce. Fast forward a month and I discover Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme issue #24. Guess who’s on the cover…the G’uranthic Guardian! I had to pick up the four issues that cover the Dark Wars story arch.
I haven’t read a lot of Doctor Strange but this issue is really well done. For a book from the year 1990, it blows away a lot of the newer books I’ve read recently (for the amount of content provided). There are some characters that are relatable to the Midnight Suns series as well. The Marie Laveau name caught my eye right away. I believe she is either the mother or grandmother of Zoe Laveau. Between the main story and the very informative history of the Multiverse, I got to give this issue five stars. I’m looking forward to reading the other three issues now.
