“IT – The Thing That Couldn’t Die!”
Note: This is an adaptation of the,1941 story “It!” by American author Theodore Sturgeon.
The sun had risen bright that morning causing the dew to glisten throughout the meadow near the Drew family farmstead. The land was fertile ground for both crops and the plethora of wild vegetation growing around the woodlands to the south, and the cool brook which flowed through the middle. It was here the strange moss-like growth came into existence.
The fungi was not aggressive at first, in fact the evolutionary patterns of the strands took some forty years to cross procreate. Then one day a human presence was added into the primordial mix of ingredients. An old soul, hurt by the American depression and historic stock market crash, came to this very meadow to end his misery. The man chose death but it was not in vain, as the fungi fed upon flesh, then over months adhered to bone. A skeleton now lay among the green mass drawing the vegetation closer and closer with each passing hour.
Soon an ungodly form began to build. In mid August of 1972 the creature became sentient. In days it stood up on two legs and examined its massive arms. The sounds of a barking dog gain its attention. The creature strode off to investigate the noise. God help the Drew family, as a monster stalks their lands.

As Halloween grows near I have turned my attention to some of the old bronze age horror comics I’m my collection. When I picked up Marvel Comics Supernatural Thrillers No.01 I was a little reluctant. Many comic books in this genre were put together as anthologies, with none of the stories relating to each other. I’ve grown to dislike that format in general, but will read one on occasion. So, I was pleasantly surprised when I opened up issue one and found that it contained a full length story.
The story itself was written sometime around the year 1941 and reflects that era of horror storytelling. I found the premise interesting as my parents exposed me to many of the horror movies from their childhoods. For modern horror fans they might find this one a bit too simplistic or even dull. I don’t want to expose my age here, but “IT!” gave me the Waltons vibes. Throw in a dash of Kolchak the Night Stalker and you are in the same ballpark.
I’m giving issue one of Supernatural Thrillers three out of five stars. If you need an old school fix check this one out. Just don’t spend a ton of money acquiring a copy. It’s not Morbius or the Living Mummy by all means.
