“Battle Of The Black Stone – Part 01 Eyes Upon Us”

Chicago, the windy city – 1936, El Borak sat hunched over a dark wood table staring intently at the glyph sketched on a cocktail napkin as the noise of the nightclub swirled around him. How did Professor Kirowan have knowledge of the ancient sigil that he himself had just uncovered in that nightmare tomb buried in Arabian sands? Francis Xavier Gordon had been extremely lucky to have escaped those dark spirits entombed there. Now, two researchers sat across from him halfway across the planet, with a pencil drawing of that very open eye which triggered a demonic insurgence.

Lost Knob, Texas, James Allison had been procrastinating this week as his story deadline grew nearer. His creative spark always burned so freely in the past, but something had steered him into a dark depression. That symbol, it was the beginning of it all, but what part of his dark psyche did it spawn? As James continued to write about his barbarian hero that evening, he now felt that odd feeling of being watched from a dark corner of his studio office.

“A Gunslinger In The Wild East”

From the earliest years of his writing, El Borak, the gunslinging adventurer and mercenary, is credited as Robert E. Howard’s first character creation. In this piece, Jeffrey Shanks exposes us to the developmental history of this lesser-known action hero. We learn the true origins of Francis Xavier Gordon and the writers who inspired Howard. The fans will not want to miss this article.

Reviewer Notes

We’re off to a good start with Titan Comics newest Conan the Barbarian side adventure. This time, all his most famous characters are being pulled together across time to face Thulsa Doom. This already beats the hell out of Ablaze Comics “Mighty Barbarians” miniseries from early 2024, and we are on Issue #01. I give it a rock solid four out of five black stone sigils.
