Hulk! – Volume 01 Issue 12
My Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“The Color Of Hate”

On the run! After exposing a corrupt Circus owner, the Hulk bounds towards the windy city of Chicago. Unknown to the gamma infused beast, or his alter ego, one Dr. Bruce Banner, the very carnival strongman who Hulk defeated, has been tracking the monster for days now. As the carney name Bruno arrives at a Chicago-based research facility, Banner wakes up in a random basement boiler room. An elderly black man sits beside him reading a newspaper.

Will Bruno gain access to new exoskeleton technology which can increase his strength by a thousand-fold? Can Dr. Bruce Banner escape the South Side of Chicago before the street gangs can kill him? What will be the fate of the carnies who worked for the Torrance Traveling Carnival?

“Green Muscles!”

Marvel Comics presents an interview with Lou Ferrigno himself! How did he get chosen to play the part of the Hulk? Does it take long to put on the green? What is it like to work with Bill Bixby? You will find all of these things out and more in this three-page exclusive!

“Embassy Of Fear”

Another dead end! Moon Knight has just rescued Marlene Alraune from certain death, but the homicidal art thief, Joel Luxor, is without the precious Horas statue. Where can the coveted artifact be now? After a thorough search of the Luxor mansion, Marlene and Moon Knight find a business card hidden inside an antique jade figurine. A clue and a solid lead is better than nothing at all.

After both adventurers recover from their wounds, Marc Spector dawns upon a new personality of Steven Grant, an archeologist and millionaire philanthropist. His sights now set on Alphonso Leroux, the ambassador to Chile, and well known in the global black market for stolen antiquities, Grant must gain access to an exclusive United Nations party. There his secretary, Caroline, can get him a one on one meeting with the man who has obtained the coveted Horas statue.

Reviewer Notes

Hulk! #12 is one of the controversial issues of Marvel Magazines hit series, as it address the mature topic of racism in modern America. Or, in retrospect, 1978 America. As Dr. Bruce Banner recovers from his rage in South Side Chicago, he will learn the true mindset of poor black people in an urban environment.

Warning: This issue of “Hulk!” contains disturbing imagery and racist language that may not be appropriate for younger and sensitive readers. Parental discretion advised!

As a comic book in general, I found it entertaining, but lacked substance for a series targeting a more mature audience. For Marvel fans who have read comparable modern-day adult themed books, it will seem that Hulk #12 lacks substance and depth in the characters. This was written in 1978, so I understand the standards of the time. I will just say this comic book didn’t hold up to some of the other Marvel series released at the time.

With the amount of content in this issue, and the fact it is printed in full color, I will give it four out of five stars. If you are looking to collect this issue just for the controversial topic, I feel you will be more satisfied than someone like me who is interested in just reading the stories. To each their own, I guess.
