“Get Me Outta Here!”
Dan Cassidy, Hollywood stuntman and special effects genius behind the Blue Devil suit, had begrudgingly taken up the mantle of superhero just days after returning to Metropolis. Thanks to the demon Nebiros, Dan has begun to scour the city in search of a medical specialist who can remove the magically infused movie prop from his skin. Things would have to wait, however, as an extra-large monkey wrench had just been thrown into the middle of Dan’s life. Say goodbye to your brownstone apartment building stuntman, and say hello to the surly supervillain named Shockwave!
Will the Blue Devil be able to help recover a sample of “super” kryptonite stolen from the vaults at S.T.A.R. Laboratories? Can Dr. Jenet Klyburn remove the Blue Devil suit from Dan Cassidy’s mortal skin before he loses his next acting gig? How many lawyers does it take to serve cease and desist papers to a super-powered battle scene? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
Dan Cassidy is back in his native Metropolis and writer Dan Mishkin has turned the stuntman’s world upside-down. Sick Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton reference, bro! This action comedy kicks into high gear as the Metropolis police and Blue Devil get a taste of underworld browbeating. If the entire series is going to be like these first two issues of Blue Devil, I know I have found my new favorite DC superhero character.
I haven’t read any of Dan Mishkin’s other work as of this date, but I do like his writing here. It reminds me a lot of Marvel’s Steve Gerber and his Howard the Duck universe. I just wish my parents had picked up a copy of Blue Devil for me when it first hit the newsstands. Maybe, just maybe, I would have spent less of my allowance on Fantastic Four books and Star Wars bubble gum trading cards.
If you are looking for an oddball DC title to collect, this is a good one to check out. I’m giving issue two of Blue Devil four out of five stars. Now everyone, please lower your heads as we pray for all the brownstone buildings that were destroyed in this book. Now where is Dan supposed to live?
