Challengers Of The Unknown – Volume 05 Issue 05
My Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“Rock & A Hard Place”

They are infected! With the help of Wonder Woman and her Lasso of Truth, the core members of the Challengers of the Unknown agree to be tested. On the upper levels of the Watchtower station, the Justice League members are about to get the shock of their lifetime. Literally.

After holding on to the lasso for a few seconds, a dark energy emerges from the Challengers’ deep psyche. To survive, Omega Energy of death has taken root inside June, Ace, Red, Professor Haley, and the other ancillary members. But why not Rocky? It matters little at this point as alarm bells begin ringing throughout the various levels of the Watchtower. The energy that once powered the homicidal maniac known as Darkseid has sent each member of the Challengers into attack mode. The Omega must survive!

Will the Justice League be able to extinguish the Omega Energy before it destroys their friends and teammates? What has become of Ultivac, the robot with a mind? Why has Rocky Davis been spared the horrors of the energy infection? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

Twist ending… Twist ending… Come on DC, now I must wait for future adventures of the Challengers of the Unknown? I’m glad to be a fan of the Challengers. However, I don’t know if I will buy other hero titles to continue with the plot. If the story continues in another Challengers series, I’m fine with that. I guess we will have to wait and see what the writers have planned.

Overall, this was a fun story to read. Fans are reintroduced to old and obscure characters. We also find out that the Justice League can be very shady when it comes to their coworkers. I know nothing of Mister Terrific, but after reading this series I wouldn’t want him leading my organization. Whatever happened to Steel, the John Henry Irons character? He needs to return!

I give this issue a solid four out of five stars. As a miniseries goes, I’m on the fence about giving it five stars across the board. My only wish was to see more of the 1990’s version of the team. They mostly sat on the bench here. I will give the series a solid four out of five stars. If you’re a fan of the Challengers, I say go get this one!
