“The Lurker Within!”
Kallian Publico, proprietor of the Numalia House of Relics, lies dead at Conan’s feet. The blade of the Cimmerian is undrenched. Something strangled the Numalian and made way with the treasure Conan had been sent to retrieve. But what could crush the rotund wretch of man with such ease? Before Conan can investigate the temple and reminisce of the Stygia artifact, a feeble shout orders him to halt.
Conan turns to find an anemic looking Nightwatchman pointing a cross bow in his direction. What luck, this is. Within minutes, the city guard arrives under torchlight to arrest the Barbarian. If the Chief Inquisitor wishes to know who the true criminal in this caper is, let them look no further than the kin of the Governor himself. Conan will not go to prison without a fight!
What was locked inside the Golden Bowl of Set? Why would an envoy of Stygians deliver a relic of Set to the High Priest of Ibis? Will Aztrias Petanius declare the innocence of Conan the Barbarian? Collect the series to find out!
Notes
- “Freely” adapted from the story A God In The Bowl by Robert E Howard.
- Aztrias Petanius, or Lady Aztrias, was originally male in the Robert E Howard story. Later, Jim Zub would use the male form of Aztrias in the Titan Comics: Conan the Barbarian series (2025/2026). Blame Roy Thomas and Stan Lee for this blunder.
Review
If you have read the 2025 Titan Comics miniseries Conan The Barbarian: Scourge of the Serpent, this comic book puts that storyline into context. This is the official Marvel adaptation of Robert E Howard’s story The God In The Bowl. What an entertaining adventure.
Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith have a grand slam here. Even though I prefer the art style of Frank Thorne, this comic still holds up to the more modern publications of the Hyborian Age. For collectors of Conan, you should really grab these earlier books in the Marvel series. I give issue 7 of Conan the Barbarian five out of five stars.
