Conan The Barbarian (TB) – Volume 01 Issue 19
My Rating

Rating: 3 out of 5.

”Twisting Loyalties Part 03 – Hunted”

Death had never gripped Conan with such melancholy. His one true love, Bêlit, and her crew of pirates had been sent to their maker whilst battling a winged demon in a jungle temple near the Zarkheba river. Now Conan was left sullen in a tropical expanse he cared nothing for.

With no crew to help pilot the Tigress back towards the coastline, the Cimmerian set the hulking mass of wood ablaze. Conan watched for some time as the immense fire began to engulf the rotting sails, which in turn lit up the interior canopy of opaque greens like the midday sun. He then turned and began to trek into the unknown reaches with the Queen of the Black Coast haunting his thoughts.

Will Conan find his way back to civilization or perish in the harsh jungles of the Kush? Who is the mysterious figure that watches the Cimmerian from his periphery? Can steel overcome fangs and claws in the dense underbrush? Collect the series to find out!

“Zula: Warrior Wizard Of The Zamballah”

In this month’s article, Jeffrey Shanks profiles one of the few recurring characters who allied themselves with Conan. That, of course, is Zula of the Zamballah tribe. Zula was not a true Robert E. Howard creation, but rather a product of Roy Thomas during his time at Marvel Comics. Come, read the fascinating history of the Darfarian warrior wizard and his/her various character depictions over the past forty years.

Reviewer Notes

In this issue, the comic book picks up immediately after Robert E. Howard’s short story “Queen of the Black Coast” – which was originally published in Weird Tales magazine in 1934. For me, this issue is merely filler material, but we see the return of one of Roy Thomas’ characters, Zula. Being a hybrid character, one skilled as both warrior and sorcerer, I can’t wait to see what this Darfarian can do. I give issue #19 of Conan the Barbarian three out of five stars.
