“Frozen Faith Part 01 – Cold Comfort”
Free from the black stone curse, Conan the Barbarian leaves Venarium to seek his fortune in the frozen northlands of Asgard. During his travels, the memories of a harsh childhood begin to resurface. Why had his father been so vague when Conan asked about their god Crom? Which mountain did the war god reside? Why were his people called Crom’s steel? The only clear answer his father provided seemed inconceivable to his young mind. Crom shall be found in the extremes cast upon one’s senses. Be it battle, or the hunt, it was left to the individual to find a path to salvation.
Thus, Conan begins a quest to reach his god through pure animalistic survival in a land not meant for the weak. It was in Asgard the Cimmerian would find his faith or die trying. What he did not expect next would challenge even his tempered steel.
“Cimmeria: Land Of Darkness And Deep Night”
In part thirteen of Jeffrey Shanks’ essay on the man behind the mythology, readers are introduced to Robert E Howard’s essay titled “The Hyborian Age”. In this document, Howard lays out the world in which Conan lived. Jeffrey breaks down the essay by giving details on the references Howard used to world build. From the Christian Bible, to the Greek philosopher Homer, Jeffrey presents a very interesting article that any fan of Conan should enjoy.
Reviewer Notes
This issue is another solid addition to the Conan universe. As Conan travels north into Asgard, readers are given a unique look into the childhood of a Cimmerian. Conan is more conflicted than once portrayed, and thankfully, the 1982 film is avoided.
I do have a few issues with the writing here, unfortunately. Would Conan be able to carry an adult grizzly bear carcass on his back? Their weight can exceed 700 pounds. How long would a half-naked woman last running around topless in the freezing cold? Probably not very long. Nice tits though. I’ll give her that.
It still remains to be seen if this woman is Red Sonja, or another character such as Valeria. My bet is on Sonja, but we will have to wait until next month to find out. I give this issue a solid four out of five stars. Until next time.
