“The Skull of Silence!”
Kull and his men had traveled for several days towards Valusia without prolonged rest. The borderlands were treacherous, indeed, but the Tiger King had filled the time contemplating a recent debate between Ka-Nu and himself. The Pict had openly ridiculed Kull for a statement he made during the previous day. An afternoon storm had left the Red Slayers and their king in a sullen state.
Contentment. Was the life of a wayward barbarian more efficacious than a king? Ka-Nu scoffed at the idea.
Later, as the sun crested over a nearby mountain range, one of Kull’s men raised an alarm. Perched upon some foothills directly to the west, stood a darkened castle; foreboding in its architecture, as if taken from a fevered dream. This was a place of legend, but unknown to Atlanteans. The so-called Skull of Silence – a place of demons and shadowed things. None of Kull’s men would tread upon its ramparts or the grounds leading up to the gates. Even Ka-Nu had heard the story of the Silence and the wizard who constructed the citadel. It would take Kull, a king longing for the days as a vagabond, to knock upon those blackened doors.

Trull has returned! Off the Gold Coast of Africa, an inventor and his associates are battling for their lives. But what horror do they face? A mammoth steam shovel machine possessed by an alien life force. One so ancient it can defeat Earth’s armies at will. All hail Trull! All hail our new overlord!
Review
King Kull has arrived in Creatures On The Loose to unlock the secrets of one creepy ass castle. Oh Kull, will you ever learn? This was a fun story, but I think Roy Thomas could have spun this into a full issue. The reprint story of Trull seems so out of date even for 1971. Minor spoiler, if you have read the book or seen the movie Killdozer, the premise is very similar. I give this debut issue a solid three out of five stars.
