Big Trouble On Little Earth!
It’s December 1990 in New York City – Midtown, high above the foot traffic in Four Freedoms Plaza, Reed and Sue take the day off to spend time with little Franklin. They have been away for too long and it is weighing on their minds. Ever since Franklin lost his powers Reed has been preoccupied with restoring them.
Two floors below Sharon Venture, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, now biologically morphed into She-Thing, is weight training in the Fantastic Four’s gymnasium. The elevator opens and old blue eyes himself, Benjamin Grimm, walks towards the comically oversized weight racks towards the middle of the building. Ben has not been the rocky orange monster for sometime now, but his wit is as sharp as ever. He has concert tickets for tonight and is not taking no for an answer. She-Thing must get out of the house at some point.
Meanwhile, in the darkness of space, a gateway to subspace opens up and a flaming starship blasts through near the orbit of Earth’s single moon. The control system has been severely damaged but the pilot is not worried. Her target is the home of the famous Fantastic Four. The prize is the immense database constructed by Reed Richards over the past several decades.
Several hours later the hulking Mister Fixit, Logan, the Amazing Spider-Man, and Ghost Rider all receive a telepathic suggestion to meet in the lobby of Four Freedoms Plaza. Several quips are exchanged but a mystery is at hand.
Why where these four summoned? Will Susan Storm explain before the animosity breaks up the band? Why are so many new faces walking the halls? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
So with the start of the “New Fantastic Four” miniseries I thought it would be fun to read the original three issues of the Fantastic Four series from 1990 that started it all. The story begins in issue 347 and goes through to issue 349. This was a really fun read!
There is a lot going on here. We have a young Franklin Richards, two romance subplots – one involving Johnny Storm, and another between an all human Benjamin Grimm and mutated Sharon Venture (the new Thing). On top of that, Mole Man and the Skrulls take center stage in a kidnapping ring. I will go with four stars for a classic Fantastic Four story arch.
