Frankenstein – Volume 04 Issue 26

Frankenstein – Volume 04 Issue 26
My Rating

Rating: 2 out of 5.

“The Battle Of The Monsters!”

Marooned  a shrinking chunk of ice, the Frankenstein Monster has little choice but starve to death while floating in the North Atlantic. That, of course, is if he doesn’t freeze first. The days pass as his chances of rescue grow slimmer by the moment. The ice which he clings to for life has been slowly melting. Thanks to a warming jet stream of winds.

Then a ship is spotted upon the horizon. Will it pass by the hideous abomination created in a lab thousands of miles away? Or is this a ghost ship conjured inside the exhausted mind of the desperate creature? In the next hour, the monster will know for certain.

“Haunted Car”

Jeff Kovell often thought of that night when he watched three armed gunmen bail out of that Cadillac, their guns blazing into the interior front seat. Something had spooked them well. As the criminals raced off into the dark woods, Jeff, the detective in training, gathered enough nerves to approach the car from the driver’s side window. What he would see next would haunt him for the rest of his life. Literally.

“Moon Madness!”

Wealth, social standing, and women; Mortimer Nash had it all. But even one living in high society can fall hard. In the case of Mr. Nash, the moon took it all from him. Just ask Allen Pharet.

“Four Wishes!”

Joe Carney has lived a rough life on the streets. He never had a home or three dollars to rub together. He drifted from one flop house to another waiting for his big break to come. Today he will get a chance to become the richest man in the world. Thanks to the small man with glowing red eyes.

Carney thought long and hard when he was granted four wishes. Was he dreaming? Were fairy tales really true? What else could go wrong in his life? At that very moment, the lowest bum living on skid row took the deal the stranger offered. It was time for Joe Carney to live the life he thought himself entitled to.

Reviewer Notes

Dick Briefer’s Frankenstein comic book series has taken a very odd turn somewhere between issue #01 and #26. I read the first issue of the series a couple of years ago, and it was filled with comedic satire and social commentary. The Frankenstein Monster took center stage in each story. It was fun entertainment the entire family could enjoy.

As of issue #26, the humor has been replaced by melodrama, hard-hitting crime, and adult horror fantasy. What happened to this series to cause such a shift in material? I was determining if I would chase this series down for my collection. After reading this issue, now I just don’t know. I give this issue of Dick Briefer’s Frankenstein two out of five stars. The artwork and production have held up, but the stories are just not very interesting.
