Blood Is Thicker…

Four hundred years ago the renegade vampire known as Andrew Bennett gifted his curse to a young woman named Mary. She was his lover for a time but was never loyal. Her dark ambitions ate away at her until one day she fled leaving Andrew all alone in his immortality.

Centuries pass and Mary, now known as the “Queen of Blood”, has launched a sinister plot to enslave mankind. The only thing standing between the living and the cult of the “Blood Red Moon” is her maker and his two friends Dmitri Muskin and Deborah Dancer.

It’s now the year 1983. The trio of vampire hunters are being pursued through the countryside somewhere inside communist Russia. Until recently Andrew Bennett was the only one on his team to endure the curse of vampirism. Then everything turned for the worst. Dmitri Muskin, the long time friend of Andrew and fierce vampire slayer, sustained a bite from the Queen of Blood herself. To make things worse, Mary just revealed that she is also the mother of Dmitri.

What sick and twisted monster would turn their own child into a bloodthirsty killing machine? Will the oldest vampire, Andrew Bennett, defeat his scorn lover and save mankind? Why does the KGB take such an interest in the cult of the Blood Red Moon? And finally, who is supplying both sides in the conflict with high tech sunbeam weapons? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

I’m really impressed by the “I, Vampire” story arch which apparently starts in issue 290. I’ve only read this issue so far, but it comes across as a mix between Marvel’s Blade and Tomb of Dracula. There are also similarities to the Underworld franchise and Interview with a Vampire. I’m definitely going to start looking for the other issues in the “I, Vampire” storyline.

This book also includes a one-shot story set in the modern world of 1983 where everything is powered by magic (rather than technology). To me it is a cross between the TV show Bewitched and the Harry Potter series. It is a really cool concept and it would be nice to see if DC continues it in future issues. I’m giving the House of Mysteries number 317 five out of five stars.
