Mission 001: Earth Idol

Nighttime, somewhere in the southern Pacific ocean, the cargo ship S.S. Chaney has been overrun with zombie-like creatures. On the bridge the captain and his first mate attempt to radio out one last S.O.S. before the cabin is overrun. The captain shouts to his second in command to check the ship’s coordinates. There is no response. The captain shouts the command again, but it’s too late. The first mate has been overtaken by the zombie illness.

Several minutes out, north of the Chaney, two inbound Quinjets race towards their target. The commander on this mission is none other than S.H.I.E.L.D. ‘s Dum Dum Dugan. Dugan has just received coms from the field office. A deep monotone voice gives a location update on the secondary target located inside the ship’s cargo hold.

“Orrgo has located the Earth Idol. Orrgo requires a status update, please respond to Orrgo!” Dugan rolls his eyes as two of his Howling Commandos are now diving out the rear of the jet. Hit-Monkey lands on the roof of the Chaney’s bridge. The heavily armed primate does a barrel roll, then flips into a four legged run. The other commando, Manphibian, dived into the water on the starboard side of the hull. His goal is to eliminate any waterborne zombie threats.

Dum Dum Dugan orders quinjet number one to land on the center deck. It’s time to take down the main threat. Howling Commandos, let’s ROAR!

Can S.H.I.E.L.D.’s newest division, S.T.A.K.E., pull off their first rescue mission? Is Hit-Monkey truly a one-man army? Was it wise to give the missile launcher to Jasper “Zombie” Sitwell? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

When you need to take on monsters sometimes you need to use monsters of your own. I picked up Marvel Comics 2015 miniseries Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D. last month, and boy I’m glad I did. We get to see just what happens when you team up a bunch of classic monsters, alien invaders, and cyborg WWII vets in this fun storyline.

I did have one question. Is this the original Orrgo from the Strange Tales book, or is this the Son Of Orrgo? I thought he had a son on Monster Island. In any case issue number one gets 5 Stars from me on the laugh factor alone.
