“The Killing Of Elves”

Manhattan has become a battleground for mob enforcers and hired assassins. But there is also something there, just out of sight, and just as prominent. These watchers have always lived among us. Our ancestors called them by various names: Huldra, Fae, Tylwyth Teg, and even Elves. Now in the urban jungle of New York City, one of these beings has just taken a bullet meant for a wealthy industrialist.

Over the next few days, a mob war will erupt, pitting the NYPD, a local gym owner, and a male stripper named Jontar against the bloodthirsty killers. Will these men survive the slaughter as it hits the street, or will the Elves need to intervene?

Who is the wealthy industrialist named Dirk Benson, and how is he tied to the mafia? Will Jontar be chosen as the avatar for the Elf justice? Will Jontar’s stripper routine become a new martial art? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

The 1980s saw a resurgence of black and white comic books, and with them came an onslaught of indie artists looking to cash in on the fad. For some, such as Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fame, they would rise from this movement to create an entertainment juggernaut. Others, like Bill W. Miller, would become synonymous with unpolished, low-quality comic books. Enter Mature Magic publishing. Say hello to Jontar.

I remember when this comic first hit the shelves in 1986. The owner of one of the LCS in my area really went out of his way to hard sell Jontar #1 to me. After reading it, I could see why. A male stripper, blessed by the Elves, becoming a New York crime fighter? Who would have ever thought? Well, apparently Miller did.

I don’t want to come across as an art snob here, but this book is the poster child for cheap production. The lettering mistakes alone are worth the purchase. Apparently, this series went for three issues. I never did see issues #2 and #3 in my area. If you are an aspiring indie comic writer or artist, definitely pick up a copy of Jontar if you can find one. It’s the equivalent of the movie “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes”. I give it two out of five stars.
