“Island Of The Damn!”
Ship Ahoy! Jack Russell has teamed up with a investigative journalist, Buck Cowan, who is currently investigating occult operations in the southern California area. Buck has discovered documents and a map linking the sale of Jack’s inheritance, i.e. the Russoff Family Castle, to a business entity located off the coast of California. Jack Russell has commandeered his family’s boat and set sail for Blackgar Island. He needs more proof to indicate his stepfather in the murder of Laura Russell.
Thirty miles from the Monterey coast a massive storm begins to toss the small Bayliner Cabin Cruiser over cresting waves. Jack fights to control the yacht but is tossed against the bulkhead. Blackness quickly overtakes his consciousness.
Jack awakes several hours later to the bright sun. Before he can gain his senses the barrel of a submachine gun is shoved in his face. A heavily armed mariner proceeds to kidnap Jack and skuttle Phillip Russell’s boat. As the skiff pushes off towards parts unknown, Jack watches the Cabin Cruiser sink beneath the waves.
Will Jack Russell find the missing Darkhold book on the mysterious Blackgar island? What lurks in the dungeons beneath the recently reconstructed Russoff family castle? Why does the young woman named Marlene hide her eyes behind dark colored glasses? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
We have Darkhold! Out of the three Marvel Spotlights, issue four is my favorite. There is monsters, mutants, and werewolves. What else does a horror fan need?
I did have one question that needs clarification. Phillp Russell has his wife Laura killed to gain access to her family’s fortune. Jack’s mother hasn’t been dead for even a month, somehow Phillip has sold the Russoff family castle, and the new owner have the entire disassembled, transported halfway across the globe, then reassembled on Blackgar Island. How is this possible? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.
Even with this huge plot hole I’m giving issue four of Marvel Spotlight five out of five. There is a lot of different elements going on in this issue. Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog are at the top of their game here. Plus, we get to see the infamous Darkhold for the first time in comic book history. This is a must buy for any Marvel horror fan.
