“Showdown”

High above the Golden Gate Bridge, two U.S. Air Force mecha have been battling each other over the possession of the boy Terry Pierce. Hyer can’t figure out why his friend and fellow mecha pilot is so desperate to kill the kid. Iron Maiden had taken two severe rocket attacks to its left arm. Hyer is beginning to realize any damage to his robo-unit transfers directly to his personal body. Before he can dwell on the pain he sees his shot. Hyer forces his machine to throw a haymaker punch at Jolly Green.

It’s a direct hit to the head! The green mech begins to fall uncontrollably toward the city streets below. Within seconds the massive machine impacts an empty parking structure. As Keene begins to move Jolly Green into sitting position Hyer’s mech lands in front of the Jolly Green. As soon as Hyer touches down on the tarmac his visual sensors pick up a man exiting the pilot seat. No. It can’t be! Colonel Merek has been piloting Keene’s mech the entire time. That only means on thing…Keene is dead!

Six-Thousand miles and descending, the mystery pilot of the Naganata has begun  entry into the Earth’s atmosphere. A breath of relief leaves the pilot’s lips as the woman removes her helmet. The thoughts of Japan flash through her thoughts but are quickly replaced by a warning signal beeping from an overhead display. The alien Insectoid robots have somehow followed her. The monster’s must be destroyed before they can wreak havoc on the human population below!

Can Jack Pierce convince Doctor Bjornseth to use her Manta mech to help rescue his son? Why is Captain Rezkova beginning to feel regret over the destruction of the U.S. Navy destroyer ship? What is the mysterious signal being broadcasted from the Deephold complex? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

More action and key reveals hit issue number five of Dark Horse’s Mecha. With one issue left in the series I’m not sure how they can tie everything up in a nice little package. It’s weird since Dark Horse Comics continued to claim Mecha was flying off the shelves everywhere.

With that being said, I still think this series should have been bigger than it was. At the time almost nobody was doing giant robot comics in America. What changed? Was it the sales numbers? To me this is a four star book even for today.
