“The Girl Called Cthulhu – Part 04”
The nickname has stuck, thanks to an overeager commander aboard the HMS Seraph. Now the girl called Cthulhu must escape the sealed container in which she was unceremoniously dumped into the Mediterranean Sea. As round after round of .303 British lead ricochets across the outer shell of Captain Martin’s former cooling unit, Minky uses her skills learned while working with the world’s foremost Illusionist, Harry Houdini, to free herself. In less than a minute, the lid to her prison springs open, filling the inner chamber with chilled seawater.
Down, Minky Woodcock dives as she puts as much distance between her and the explosives before a royal sailor’s bullet finds its mark. Then a forthcoming flash of light erupts, sending a shockwave rocketing in Minky’s direction. She tries to brace herself, but unconsciousness soon takes over…
Will Operation Mincemeat fool Adolph Hitler, freeing Allied forces to attack Sicily? Why has El Duce banned Aleister Crowley from entering the abbey of Thelema? Who is Peter Fleming’s lesser-known little brother? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
I think Cynthia Von Buhler has overplayed her hand here a bit. In that, I mean, she shoehorned a lot of extra fluff into the end that really wasn’t necessary. I get that Aleister Crowley was a complete waistoid degenerate at that point in his life. But why drag the story down with another pointless interaction between the two characters? Especially when Crowley reveals nothing else of significance about Minky’s mother.
I liked the series, but will I climb aboard the next train that is a Minky Woodcock release? With so many other new release books waiting to be read, I don’t know if I can truly answer that question (as of today). For issue #04, I give it four out of five stars. The series as a whole also gets four stars from me. If you are a history buff, I would imagine you will enjoy this series. Pure superhero fans may not.
