“The Shadows”

Mount Vernon, Virginia, 1799 – a small group of family members have gathered to say goodbye to former President of the United States, George Washington. The local physician, Dr. Craik, who arrived earlier in the morning, had given George’s wife Martha a medical diagnosis that she was unwilling to accept. George had complained of a small cold, yes, but he seemed in good spirits. Martha was convinced that something had happened to her husband yesterday inside the hanging woods east of their mansion.

Outside the estate a black coach slowly passed by unnoticed. Glowing yellow eyes peek out through the carriage windows as a sinister conversation takes place within. Dry crackly voices go over several points and their disappointment. George Washington had the perfect genes to pass on the psychic traits the creatures desired. Unfortunately the man was too old to reproduce. It mattered not. The Gatherers had frighted the former war general into a state of shock. Whatever they did to him in the woods that day will be left unanswered.

Georgetown, Washington DC, 2012 – Jim Duffy and Zoe Davis sit in 19th century bergere armchairs next to a warming fireplace. Both have demanded answers from Baron Winters, the chief of these is how they instantly traveled from a sterile hospital corridor to the eccentric study inside the shadowy Wintersgate Manor. The Baron has promised answers but first Zoe needs to describe the monster’s who abducted her and where her baby is located. Zoe has no memory of being pregnant or of giving birth. Was the Baron insane?

What are the shadow creatures that attacked both Jim and Zoe inside Wintersgate Manor, as well as FBI agent Jim Duffy Sr in the year 1955? Does Doctor Levine have evidence of Zoe being pregnant with an abnormal child. What is generations one through ten? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

Wow, things are getting very interesting indeed. Marv Wolfman is crafting another time jumping adventure, historical events be damned! This is what I loved about the previous two volumes of Night Force. We get  outlandish horror and science fiction stories anchored to real world events. If you are looking for a good horror series set in the DC Universe, check out Night Force. You will get everything from religious mysteries, to witches and warlocks.

I was really happy with this issue, especially the Kassandra Fey character. Baron Winters can be a dick but that comes with trying to balance good and evil. I hope Marv gives us insight into Merlin this time. I give this issue four out of five stars.
