“Born Again”
Wintersgate Manor – 2012 AD, Baron Winters and his leopard Merlin stand in watch over the rescued Jim Duffy and Mia woman as they recover from the Washington DC mansion fire earlier in the evening. The monster’s known as the Gatherers had attempted to kill Mia and her Generation-2 darkling baby, but Jim had accidently distracted the Nurses during his search of Greene’s home. It was all in vain. If it wasn’t for the quick response of the Firefighters in Fire Engine Company 32 all three would have been burned alive.
Elsewhere, Zoe Davis finds herself encased in some type of biomimetic incubator cocoon. The oozing compartment is wrapped around her naked body like an unbreakable rubber membrane. As she struggles to free herself Zoe can hear several people yelling at each other from outside her prison. The voices sound familiar but in her state of anxiety it matters little.
Outside a group of Gatherers, Harvesters, and Nurses have gathered around the incubator. Front and center are both Senator Brian W. Greene and his wife Sela. The woman is trying to convince the future president of the United States to participate in the insemination ritual. He has performed the act against his will many times over, but Sela beggingly tells him this is the last time. As Senator Greene staggers back from his wife’s verbal assault, her face begins to shift. Sela’s face morphs from the middle-aged brunette he loved so dearly into a hideous hag. Yes, he now realizes this creature is not one he recognizes. This is the witch, Kassandra Fey!
Can Sgt. Jim Duffy Jr returned once again to his father’s house in 1956 to stop the Gatherer known as Simon Talman? Will Zoe Davis escape the Nurses before she is impregnated once again with a Darkling child? Is Baron Winters powerful enough to cleanse the dark souls from Wintersgate Manor? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
Boom! What an ending. I have to say in all honesty Volume 03 of Night Force was the best storyline in the series. Volume 01 was fine but ended abruptly due to sales. Thanks, DC, for nothing. Volume 02 was good but there was a lot of focus on the crossover events with the Challengers of the Unknown, Fate, and Scare Tactics. Horror books are flighty at best when it comes to sales. Too bad because they are my favorite of the comic book genres.
I can’t say this enough, but if you are a horror comics fan, or just a fan of DC comics in general, check out Night Force Volume 03. In 2012 Marv Wolfman was in the right place and the right time to get the production staff he did. I’m giving this issue four out of five stars. For Volume 03, it is one of those that can be reread multiple times, so I’m giving it five out of five stars.
Apparently in 2018 Baron Winters and his Night Force return in DC comics series Raven: Daughter of Darkness Volume 01 (Issues 07-12). I’m going to check that one out. See you next time.
