Occult Files Of Doctor Spektor – Volume 01 Issue 03
My Rating

Rating: 3 out of 5.

“The Mummy’s Soul”

The golden mask of the sorcerer Ra-Ka-Tep. It was the stuff of legends. But where had it gone? Today, Doctor Spektor and his lovely assistant Lakota Rainflower have arrived at the archeological dig site of one Professor Daugherty. The US-born archeologist had discovered the tomb after years of research. It was there that the fabled treasure held the evil magician for eternity.

Over the next two days, Doctor Spektor and his friends will battle a demonic curse spawned 3,700 years ago when the great pyramids were but anew. Will the combined knowledge of Spektor and Daugherty be enough to subdue such forces? Or, will Lakota Rainflower succumb to the unfilled lust of an ancient mummy?

“A Weird New World For Joe Matucha”

Greed. Is it the product of modern civilization, or the lack of elders who teach wisdom? For Matucha, a son of African traditionalism, his escape to the big city of Kinshasa, where he would lose his innocence. There the boy would learn capitalism and all the sins that come with it.

In this chapter, Doctor Spektor will lay out the story of Joe Matucha, a former African tribesman who seeks to steal from his former people and the god which they worship. Can Matucha convince the village witch doctor to cast aside the old ways and help kill the Gorilla God, whom they pay tribute to on a monthly basis?

Reviewer Notes

The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor is a throwback to anthology storytelling made popular in the Gold and Silver Age of comic books. Unfortunately, by 1973, Western Publishing had failed to recognize that readers wanted more from their heroes than disjointed adventures with no overall story arc. Thanks to guys like Stan Lee, Marvel Comics had taken over the market with stories which spanned the entire book, and in many cases multiple issues.

Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy this issue of Doctor Spektor. It just seemed very uninspiring overall. After reading the Marvel Comics series “Supernatural Thrillers” – featuring the ongoing turmoil of N’kantu the Living Mummy, the mummy story here really pales in comparison. Keep in mind, both comic books were released in the same year. If I was a kid buying comics on a limited budget back then, I would definitely have chosen the Marvel option over this.

I guess I will have to see if Doctor Spektor makes the transition to a more modern format. Keeping my fingers crossed. Issue #3 gets three out of five stars.
