Red Sonja: Empire Of The Damned – Volume 01 Issue 03

My Rating

Rating: 1 out of 5.

“Chapter Three”

Trapped! A blinding sandstorm has engulfed Red Sonja and the sorcerer Luna in the red sands of the eastern desert. As they try to make headway toward the Hyrkanian valley marked on their map, the two treasure hunters stumble upon a party of lost Pilgrims.

Reluctantly, Sonja agrees to help the old man and his two vassals under the strict understanding they must not become a burden. No matter, as Luna performs an ancient spell of protection against the suffocating storm, the dunes begin to shift out from under their feet. The group has just disturbed a nest of sand devils!

Who are the mysterious travelers that roam the sands where no others should be? Will Red Sonja and Luna be able to find the hidden valley with limited vision? What lies beneath the sands of the Hyrkanian desert?

Reviewer Notes

I will just come out and say it. This issue was not good at all. I don’t like being negative when it comes to other people’s art and creativity, but when I’m paying $4.99 for a book containing very little content, something must be said. The quality of interior art set aside, the creative team used two-page spreads and oversized panels to compensate for the lack of storytelling and dialog here. To add to the padding tactic, Dynamite includes 12 full-page advertisements. That is a lot of real estate for a 32-page book.

I guess I’m unclear what, if anything, this series is supposed to give to the fans of Red Sonja. The entertainment value is not here. If the purpose is to push out books for alternate cover sales,  just go into the poster business. Dynamite Entertainment, please help me like your books. I want to. For this issue, I got to go with one out of five stars. It is that lacking.
