“Part One – Stealing Faces & Finery”

Brule scanned the mists for recognizable faces. The Shaman had promised him the truth, even if it was forcibly provided. The Spear-Slayer had to confirm the validity of his ally. Was the king of Valusia of sound mind?

Gonar inhaled smoke from his pipe once again, then blew it towards the glowing mists. After a few seconds, he changed the wording of his chant, then figures began to appear. Brule knew the old Pict had powerful visions, but to share those with others had mystified him. There, in the green light, a ghostly form of Kull appeared. But he was not alone.

Other men from across a sea of time began to appear. For what purpose, it was not clear. A barbarian of great stature walked the same path as Kull. Then another adorned in strange fashions. This one was no warrior, yet his demeanor expressed importance. Gonar must explain these visions before Brule could act. His mission was too important to risk failure at the hands of dark sorcery.

How do these men share a connection with King Kull of Atlantis? Will Conan the Barbarian risk his life entering the Temple of Kallian Publico? Where did Joseph Roelocke find the serpent ring of eons past? Collect the series to find out!

“Hyborian Noir: Mystery, Murder, And The Shadowy Secrets of ‘The God Of The Bowl’”

Jeffrey Shanks brings to light one of Robert E Howard’s early works. “The God of the Bowl” was rejected by Weird Tales Magazine, but is now being reevaluated as one of the key stories that developed Conan as a character. As a fan, I will be researching more into this storyline.

Review

Titan Comics has opened the floodgates of space-time once again with their “Scourge of the Serpent” event. Jim Zub has adapted Robert E Howard’s The God of the Bowl into this detective-inspired story arc with perfect precision. Professor John Kirowan and his friend James Gordon return to print as well with several references to Howard’s The Haunter of the Ring — one of his Cthulhu-inspired works. This book is a four-star blast from the past. Which one? Take your pick.
