Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane – Volume 01 Issue 92

Rating: 3 out of 5.

“The Unbreakable Spell”

Today is launch day for the Mars-Shoot rocket test in the desert outside of Satellite City. Lois Lane guns her Willie’s Jeep up through the backroads, racing towards the launch site. The press event starts at noon on the dot. The Daily Planet’s new star reporter beat out Clark Kent for the assignment, now Lois finds herself running late to the event.

As Lois travels along the desert terrain she performs a mental checklist of sorts for what is about to take place. At 12:30pm Superman arrives at the artificial comet storage area. Twenty minutes later the Man of Steel will launch the comet into the atmosphere simulating a full celestial fly by event. Next the scientists will launch the rocket through the tail of the comet collecting a vast array of data for future fights to Mars. Before Lois can finish her thoughts the jeep’s engine begins to blow steam up from underneath the hood. Within seconds the four cylinder engine shudders to a halt. “Great”, Lois pouts, “I can’t seem to catch a break today”.

Two hours have passed and Lois finds herself awakening from a state of exhaustion. A large white horse stands above her casting some shade from the roasting sun above. Lois remembers leaving the broken down Jeep and making her way on foot to the rocket launch site. With the high temperatures, and no drinking water, even a determined reporter would be hard pressed to survive long in this desert heat. Now a familiar muzzle prodding her to stand. Comet the Superhorse has come to her rescue.

Can an artificial comet break the ancient spell cast on a more than human Superhorse? Who is the weird stage magician named Bill Biron and how does he know so much about Lois Lane? Why is there an old couple following Lois at the Desert Palms Motel lounge?

“Part II – The Chestnut Mare Ain’t What It Used To Be!”

The evil wizard Maldor has been pulled forward in time by Bill Biron’s centaur magic. Now the ancient Greek villain seeks revenge upon his Olympian foe. With Maldor’s spells counteracted by the original Superhorse curse, the sinister spellslinger must find a new way to hurt his sworn enemy. Lois! The evil wizard hatches a plot to curse Lois Lane with the transformation curse placed on Superhorse thousands of years ago.

Can Bill Biron stop Maldor’s spell in his present human form? Will Superman survive a close encounter with a Rogue Kryptonite Meteor? Does the ancient Greek Sorceress Circe have enough magic to cross the rivers of time and save Lois Lane from never-ending fillydom? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

Wow, this was an odd story indeed. As I’m no Superman eficienciotto, nor a Silver-Age

DC Comic guru, I’m going to guess Superhorse, a.k.a. Comet, a.k.a. Bill Biron,  is featured to some extent in the 1960s mythos. “Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane – Issue 92” is mainly a backstory issue for Superhorse.

We get an introduction to the Sorceress Circe, her evil nemesis Maldor, and to some extent a slice of Greek mythology. The whole plot revolves around a curse placed upon Comet back in ancient Greece and his solitary confinement in the Constellation Sagittarius sector of space. There is a total combination of science and magic leading to a final showdown featuring Superman in a cameo role.

The story was okay, no doubt I love the artwork, but I think a DC Superman purist would cherish this book more than I. It’s a nice snapshot into the 1960’s, but this one just wasn’t for me. I give this issue three out of five stars.
