“The Dark Crystal – Part 02”

Inside the dreaded castle of the Skeksis, the exiled chamberlain has returned with a peace offering to Emperor Skekung. Skeksil captured the young Gelfling girl named Kira while fighting the shard holder, Jen, in the caverns deep under the castle. The conniving wretch has won a pardon but it comes with a price. With the great conjunction only hours away, the Skeksis Emperor must ensure the prophecy will fail. Thus, Skeksil must prove he killed the last Gelfling or face a quick execution.

Outside the keep the last of the Mystics have  arrived from the great wilderness to the north. The Dark Crystal has called out to them just as the prophecy has foretold, but as the gentle giants approach the bridge leading to the outer gates a brigade of Garthim move to block their path. Their crustaceos shells gleam like darken steel under the light of the three suns.

In the darkness of the caverns known as the Teeth of Skreesh, the beastly pet of Kira has help Jen free himself from the Collapsed tunnel which trapped him earlier in the day. Fizzgig was little in size bit his large mouth came with a solid bite. Both heroes race off in search of Kira and the ritual chamber holding the fractured crystal.

Can Kira escape the dread scientist’s torture chair before her life-force is drained? How will Jen reach the top of the Dark Crystal before the three suns align? Why does Kira have wings and Jen does not? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

For those of you who are fans of the Dark Crystal movie this adaptation will be a treat. Regular readers may not find the same enjoyment. Who knows for sure. I’m just impressed the writer and artist was able to pull this epic off within the confines of two standard size books.

As I stated in my last review, some of the grand visuals of the film were scaled down in order to convey as much of the story to the readers as possible. I prefer an interesting story over art when space is limited. In my honest opinion, for comic books printed in 1983, Writer David Anthony Kraft and artist Bret Blevins knock it out of the park. This Dark Crystal nerd gives this issue five out of five stars. The overall adaptation deserves a five out of five as well. Now on to my second favorite Jim Henson movie, the Labyrinth…
