“The Mighty Barbarians – 06”

At the door of the demon’s fortress, Kull and his band of Barbarians have fought their way through the goblin army. Now the only thing standing between them and the last Orb of the ancient ones is the Dark One, oh and a corrupted Merlin. No matter the strength of the enemy, Morgan Le Fay has to reach the last orb or the multiversal plains of existence will fall to the darkness.

All members of the Mighty Barbarians sally forth. Mass chaos erupts as longswords lock with demon horns, werebears throttle goblin bodies, and magic bolts blasts through hex placed shields. Kull is the first to reach the towering pedestal supporting the orb but Merlin the Magician stands in his way. Can brute steel vanquish the most powerful wizard known to man? The king of Valusia thinks so!

Reviewer Notes

We’ve reached the conclusion of the Mighty Barbarians Volume one. To be honest, I’m a fan of Ablaze and their adaptations of Robert E Howard’s work, but I didn’t care for this storyline. I found it odd that Michael Moreci would build a team around characters that never even existed in the same literary world. I get they are cool characters, but I would have loved to see Kull team up with other characters from the Hyboria and Thurian Age.

Overall the art was incredible, but the dialog was rather sophomoric. This issue wasn’t as bad as the previous one, but things like Birka the viking warrior calling the main antagonist a “dick” just doesn’t make sense. Is she a sixteen year old high school boy? Where would she even have picked up the phrase?

I’m giving this issue of Mighty Barbarians three out of five stars. As a series overall I’m giving the same rating, three out of five stars. Don’t hate me Ablaze, I’m a fan, but there was so much potential here to launch a Kull comeback it felt wasted to me. Maybe you will like the series, unfortunately I did not.
