The Savage Sword Of Conan – Volume 01 Issue 08
My Rating

Rating: 3 out of 5.

“Treasure Of The Vermin Queen”

When Fleek spoke of treasure, this was not what Conan had envisioned. In the absence of gold coins, ruby chalices, and all the gilded absoluteness sold to children as a matter of fact, what lay before the Cimmerian made his blood boil. The underground temple held no ver-men trove, nor alms enough to buy a single slice of bread. This was some form of methodical incubator filled with demonic oogonia.

The only question Conan had at this juncture was his partner’s whereabouts. Fleek had scampered off, leaving his partner to deal with an oncoming ceremonial line filled with hooded occultists. Conan smirked in despisement. This was the final straw. Conan was going to kill Fleek, treasure or no treasure.

“When I Was Young, I Met A King”

The Faded Hand stretched far across the desert sands, a girl of the Red City it sought. Stygian sorcery hunted for the child. For what dark purpose, it was unknown. The child of Turan was special. Her father knew this to be true. His healing gift had manifested in the child as it had done throughout the bloodline.

Many attempts had been made to kidnap the child; fortune or divine province had protected her so far. However, with each failure, her protectors perished in the most gruesome ways. It would take a warrior of a certain caliber to deliver the girl safely to the mountaintop temple of Mitra. In truth, it would take a king.

“Kinship Of The Fallen”

A poem of kings, kinship, and taverns. Written by Jim Zub. Illustrated by Dan Panosian.

“Live By The Sword”

In the time of Richard the Lionheart, Englishmen spilled blood in faraway lands. To rescue the Holy Land from barbaric Muslim invaders meant everlasting salvation even within the fracturing Kingdom of Great Britain. But not all men fight for the glory of the gods and royal favors. For one clansman with jaded Nazarene virtues, gold was his motivation. This is the story of a crusader, Cormac Fitzgeoffrey.

“Coils Of The Golden Empress”

Along the shores of the southern Kush awaits an inlet cove. Treasure can be found there, deep within the crystal blue waters, yet for three sailors, their quest for the Golden Empress would have to wait. Amra, the consort to the pirate queen, Bêlit, has just delivered himself into their camp. Oh, the bounty such a head will bring! The Bamzaga Chieftain will just have to wait.

“The Wuthering”

During a time when Conan wandered the forested regions of the Picts, he discovered an Asear warrior dying within ancient ruins. It was there that the Cimmerian would be tested, not for his skill with a blade, but his moral fortitude. Has fate barred Tor Himdhul from the golden halls of Valhalla, or can the son of Crom send him there?

Reviewer Notes

This issue of Savage Sword of Conan is the equivalent of variety hour television. Epic adventure this is not. However, there is enough content to keep even the most committed fans entertained. I give this month’s edition three out of five stars.
