Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker – Volume 01 Issue 364

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker – Volume 01 Issue 364

My Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Man From Mars

Woody Woodpecker has just been kidnapped by a man from Mars! Why wouldn’t his grumpy neighbor Tackhammer listen to him? The signs were all over the sky last night! Now our pesky protagonist is barreling towards the red planet.

Will Woody be able to survive on a hostile world populated by creatures who talk backwards and walk upon their hands? Why is Tackhammer so dead set against ufo sightings? Is there an ice truck which delivers from deep space?

Travel To Mexico

What can go wrong with a little vacation to sunny Mexico? They have the senoritas, the siestas, and ultimate bull fighting. Oh that’s right, Woody’s neighbor Tackhammer.

Can Woody Woodpecker take Tackhammer’s bullfighting championship title away from him? How many men has El Toro put into an early grave? Will Woody get a date with that second story senorita?

Ski Lodge Adventure

Winter is here and it’s time to hit the ski slopes. The only problem Woody Woodpecker has is getting there in one piece. Look out Tackhammer, here comes the vacation ruiner!

Are there enough rooms at the upstate ski lodge? Will Woody find an economical way to get free lift service on the mountain side? Can Tackhammer beat his arch enemy in a rigged coin toss? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

I remember as a kid watching those old Woody Woodpecker cartoons on Saturday morning. It was the 1970’s and yet I believe the cartoons were much, much older. A few months ago I came across a high grade copy of Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker number 364 for two dollars and snatched it up. Now that I have a vintage comic book review website it’s time to review Woody!

Dell released this issue back in 1952, for what I imagine was the Baby-Boomer generation. The stories and humor are definitely written for adult readers however. If you’ve seen any vintage cartoons from that era (ie. Warner Brothers’ Bugs Bunny, or Hannah Barbara’s Flintstones) you will see my point. Things don’t need to be dumbed down to be entertaining. My favorite scene is the random citizen passing by Woody with a think-bubble above their head. Inside there is a picture of a wood screw and a baseball. The good old days of visuals.

The art in this book is classic 1950s. If you are looking for a bit of nostalgia I recommend picking up a copy of any of the Dell comic books. There is enough content to keep children and adults busy for an hour or two. Woody gets 4 out of 5 stars from me.
