Rating: 3 out of 5.

“Cry Werewolf!”

On the hunt! The Hangman, a Vietnam veteran with a history of psychological disorders, has hit the streets once again searching for the criminal in the fur suit. But the hunter has become the hunted. Unknown to the vigilante, and the human mind who stalks him, a real werewolf has zeroed in on his prey. Will a noose and scythe be enough to stop a supernatural being powered by the Darkhold?

Somewhere in another part of Los Angeles, the criminal organization known as the Committee has begun torturing Phillip Russell. Not only does Jack’s stepfather owe a huge amount of debt to the Maggia, they also know about a werewolf in the Russell family tree. Can the homicidal Professor Makko “convince” Phillip to disclose the location of his stepson, or will the nerve-impulse charger machine destroy his shackled body first? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

Artist Gil Kane has definitely earned his spot as one of Marvel Comics superstars. His work here is amazing for 1973. With Marv Wolfman writing the scripts I can see why the Werewolf By Night has become a horror icon even today.

The villains in the early issues of the series are not spectacular, but there is enough variation in antagonists to keep Jack, Buck, and Lissa busy until the series fleshes out. The Hangman character is a prototype for the Punisher, if I remember correctly. He makes this issue at least entertaining. I give Werewolf By Night #12 three out of five stars.
