“Battle For The Palace Of The Gods!”

A battle rages forward within the Nexus of all Realities (a.k.a. Man-Thing’s swamp)! What first began as a scrap between monster and construction workers, has escalated into a fight for their very souls. A legion of demons  from the Multiverse began an attack on the F.A. Schist Construction worksite – a company well known for polluting natural habitats across the globe. But where does this leave Man-Thing, Korrek the Barbarian, and Howard Duckson? A flock of cold turkeys!

Monster punches man, barbarian slays demon, and duck shoots wildly into the fray. Who will win this insanity? Say hello to the second best wizard on this side of the Sanctum Sanctorum, Dakimh the Enchanter! He must aid this motley crew of heroes if they are to assist him against a bigger threat. The Congress of Realities!

Did what happened just really happen? Why will the gods never intervene inside the Castle with their namesake? Why are their dogs loose on the castle grounds? Collect the series to find out!

Review

Welcome to the weird world of Steve Gerber, a comic book writer unlike any other during his time. After reading Man-Thing #1, it is quite clear why Gerber had such a cult following. In an age of tired superhero tropes, he broke the mold with such characters as Howard the Duck, Elf with a Gun, and Doctor Bong. Man-Thing was one of the more conventional concepts he brought to the pages of Marvel Comics. See the Swamp Thing and The Heap for clarification.

The comic book begins as a continuation story, in which the main character, Man-Thing, takes a back seat to Gerber’s more prized character, Howard. And let’s not forget the low rent, Conan the Barbarian knock-off, Korrek. This was an interesting read, but for those who missed out on the beginning of the story arc, you may feel a bit lost. I certainly was. Overall, this was a fun read with killer art by Val Mayerik and a cover by Frank Brunner. It only ranks three stars from me, unfortunately. Hopefully the next issue is more Man-Thing centered.
