“Getting To Know You”
Officer Nick Caruso is under fire at the entrance of the East Village Community Action Spearhead for performing a false divorce ceremony during a 10-52 yesterday. Nick and his rookie partner Donnegan sit in their squad car as a gaggle of women surround them in protest. Community activist leader Judith Bitterman yells at both officers through the driver’s side window; several of the local Skells cover Mo’s side with follow-up retorts.
Judith is known for her over-the-top public protests but this is more personal. The stabbing of Luis Ruiz by his wife is being tied to Officer Caruso’s stunt. In the court of public opinion facts matter little when big dollars await those who win lawsuits. Nick inches closer to litigation with every response he yells out his squad car window.
It’s day two for Officer Donnegan and the excitement has just begun. A shootout at a Bodega finds the 8th finest up against a numbers ring. Later a four alarm fire sends the Rookie scrambling through black smoke looking for an old woman’s “babies”. All this looms under the shadow of the Eviscerator Slayings.
Has Judith Bitterman mistakenly revealed new evidence in Detective Paddy McGopolan’s Eviscerator investigation? Will Mo really consider a three-way between squads? Will the old Russian woman get to finish watching Days Of Our Lives? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
Issue number two of Cops: The Job was another unexpected surprise in my opinion. This series may not be for everyone, but for a cop drama it’s as good as any written for the plethora of police drama television shows out there in 1992 and today. I can’t believe this mini-series didn’t continue after the four issue run.
In the “letters from the readers” section several police officers send in letters with light criticism and praise. The main topic seems to be the use of the official police codes and banter between officers. Is it cannon? Who knows. I’m giving this one four out of five stars. If you like the police genre you should be entertained by this vintage series.
