“Giants”
“All Roads Lead to Rome”, someone famous once said. In Gotham City the rail system shares that sentiment. The Robinson Central Terminal connects commuters with the cushy metroliners, hardened subways, and Amtrak territories. People come and go, each a giant in their own minds, all with a story.
In the daylight the citizens of Gotham act civil in most cases, but as night approaches the criminal element replaces one giant with another. On this day in 1992, as the night begins to fade, Batman has come to the grand train station in pursuit of a hardened criminal. No one is aware yet, but they soon will be.
As the morning commuters file into the RTC, fate has singled out eight average everyday citizens. Their stories are no different than the thousands who pass through the station on a daily basis. Today, however, fate has tether these Gothamites to an ongoing investigation conducted by the Dark Knight himself.
Why wont Jimmy make any romantic advances on Jennifer duringtheir daily subway commute? Will Joel and Emma Mayfield make their scheduled doctor’s appointment? Has Batman found an accomplice to the thug named Pack? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
What a beautifully written story this was. John Ostrander takes the lives of several ordinary people and interweaves them into a plot set in the grimey backdrop of 1990’s Gotham city. The architecture, the clothes, the dialog is firmly set around the gothic modern style from the movies.
This issue was released in March 1992. In September of the same year Batman: The Animated Series series was released with critical acclaim. Batman: Gotham Nights has a lot of the same visual elements seen in the television show. I don’t know if the creative teams were aware of each other’s work but I love this interpretation of the Batman universe.
I’m giving issue number one of Gotham Nights four out of five stars. If the other three issues in this mini-series are the same quality, I would definitely recommend this to any Batman fans out there. There are some adult topics peppered into the dialog, so if you have kids you may want to hold off. I would say this is a 17+ advisory.
