Werewolf By Night: Red Band – Volume 01 Issue 01

My Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“Werewolf By Night”

Home is where the heart is… And the lungs and the intestines. Life was on the verge of tranquility for Jack Russell. He had helped defeat a homicidal necromancer named Docktor Nekromantik. Famous monster hunter, Elsa Bloodstone, had become BFFs with his werewolf persona. Now Jack is the sole owner of a sweet sweet castle teleported from Bavaria to the Rocky Mountains. Life should be good so far, right? Nope!

What happened to Jack Russell’s memory when the skies turned black and the vampires reigned? Who killed the two locals on the Colorado hiking trails? How many livestreamers does it take before home invasion charges are filed? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

Jack is back and so are his uncontrolled changes. Thanks to the Blood Hunt event and the Darkforce energy, even the werewolves don’t seem to be unaffected. If you’re a fan of the original Werewolf By Night series, you will want to collect this four-issue miniseries.

Issue #1 begins where the Marvel Halloween one-shot event ends (Werewolf by Night, Vol. 04 No.01 2023). Jack Russell is busy cleaning up his new home when the Blood Hunt reaches his doorstep. Things go awry, and we see the return of the beast inside. As it should be, in my honest opinion. Friendly werewolves in human society? Come on, man!

I love when writers can mix comedy in with any superhero title, and Jason Soo does a very good job of it. He seems to have a similar style to that of Ryan North of Squirrel Girl and Fantastic Four fame. Artist Sergio Dávila is quickly becoming one of my favorites in the Marvel bullpen as well. This was a fun read even if Marvel intended this to be “shocking”. I wasn’t grossed out, but I’m definitely giving Werewolf By Night: Redband #1 four out of five stars. I’m looking forward to the next installment in the series.
