Conan The Barbarian – Volume 01 Issue 02

My Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

“Bound In Black Stone – Part 02 Homeland!”

Death has come to the Aquilonian outpost of Hauler’s Roam. Just hours before Conan the Cimmerian had resigned his mercenary title over a dispute in the command structure. His leader lay unconscious on the tavern floor as the brooding slayer attempted to drink the horrors of the previous battle out of his memories. The battlemaster of the Bleeders was an unseasoned fool who sent men to an undeserving doom. Conan would have no more of it!

Later, upon the cresting autumn moon, Conan and a Pictish scout named Brissa watch as an army of ghouls lay waste to the small trading community. These beasts were once among the living, Pict warriors to be exact, until an unholy magic plucked their rotting bodies from the carrion birds and thrust them into battle. Conan decides to follow the raiding party north towards his ancestral lands. There they will rally his people as he did against the invading Aquilonian army.

The raiders would spend the night gathering up corpses from the crumbling buildings razed just hours before. They pile the dead in nets as fishermen would with their catch. In the cold dawn Conan and Brissa would begin a long chase as the ghouls drag their necrotic collection towards the northlands. What sorcery controlled these monsters, Conan knew not. Revenge was his primary concern.

What controls the undead Picts and their list for slaughter? Will the Cimmerian lands go unmolested by the host bent on genocide? Can Brissa reclaim her tribe’s ancient sword before Conan damages the blade? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

Now this is how you make comic books. Sorry Marvel, buy a copy and take notes. As a fan of Marvel Comics “Conan The Barbarian” and “The Savage Sword Of Conan” I can say Titan has recaptured the magic of those bronze age books.

The art and writing is top notch on both issues one and two, and I’m looking forward to the next one to drop. I’m bummed because the writer refers back to “Conan The Barbarian” issue zero in this story. Wait, whaaat? There was a Free Comic Book Day Cona release earlier this year? Now I must scour eBay for a reasonably priced version of this free book. By Crom’s hairpiece! I give issue five out of five stars.
