Summertime – 1992, Rookie Police Officer Maureen Donnegan has just arrived at the 8th Precinct located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Today is her first day on the job, but before the daughter of decorated Officer Liam Donnegan can even enter the station two plain-clothes cops push past her in the entryway while dragging a cuffed Rastaferian in for processing. Apparently the Jamaican immigrant “mistaken” a spare tire for two hundred pounds of primo ganja. Welcome to the 8th also known as “Emerald City”.
Later at the morning briefing, Officer Donnegan receives her first bit of luck. Due to an officer shortage Maureen is spared the N.F.G. orientation session and assigned to partner with Officer Nick Caruso a veteran and master at street negotiations in Sector Charlie. Now it’s time for the Rookie to get some dirt under her nails and beat the street.
Will Officer “Mo” Donnegan survive her first day in the midst of an active investigation involving a serial killer referred to as the Eviscerator? How many quotes are found in Nick Caruso’s Book of wisdom? Does hype suspect Rushin’ George really know the location of a decapitated body near 2nd Ave and 9th Street? Grab that 95 Tag and find out!
Reviewer Notes
I was more than surprised by the level of detail put into issue one of the four part series “Cops: The Job”. In 1992 Marvel Comics attempted to capture the reality of New York police officers, and I think they hit the mark with this series. In issue one we follow Rookie Cop Maureen Donnegan as she traverses through multiple response calls dealing with the grittiness of various urban emergencies. There is a 10-52 Domestic Dispute, 10-34 Assault In Progress, and 10-69 Narcotics to name just a few.
Amongst the random chaos, writer Larry Hama weaves in a plot involving a serial killer, corrupt activists, and a disrespectful news reporter jockeying for self promotion. Leave it up to Ambulance chasers to muck up a police investigation. There is one thing that didn’t get mucked up however, and that’s my five star rating. If you are into police dramas definitely check this one out!
