“The Last Town On The Left”

Ben Grimm and his wife Alicia traveled all day. This was their first vacation without the kids in many years. They could have booked some exotic getaway on some faraway island like Hawaii or the Savage Lands. No, the Grimms chose a quiet road trip through the backroads of Pennsylvania.

The time was almost dusk as Ben turned their big blue pickup truck into the parking lot of the Cedar Grand Motor motel. It was a rustic but serviceable establishment. Alicia didn’t care about the looks for obvious reasons. She was just happy to have her husband to herself. Ben used his extraordinary strength to carry their entire collection of suitcases in one arm, and walked with Alicia towards the front door. They both walked into the main office and were greeted by the most authentic mid-century décor they’ve ever seen.

In the morning the motel manager didn’t remember checking the Grimm couple in for the night. Ben looked perplexed. How could someone not remember checking in a large orange monster? Oh well, what’s the checkout fee? Three dollars?! What?! Must be some kind of Monday special.

The two loaded up the pickup and drove a half mile down the road towards the town of Cedar, Pennsylvania. Ben became more and more confused as the cars that passed by were all extremely rare vintage cars and trucks. Is that a 1940 Buick Special convertible? Wow, a cop in a 1941 Pontiac Streamliner! Is that an old Chevy milk truck? Ben knew a little about cars, even helped fix some back in his college years.

Come to think about it, he hasn’t seen any modern vehicles since they entered the city limits. Everyplace has an environmentalist with a Prius. Not here. Wait, the people, the buildings, even the advertising all look old-timey. Ben and Alicia, welcome to 1947 America.

Reviewer Notes

We finally get a good writer on the FF! I’ve been waiting for Ryan North to take the reins and he does not disappoint. This issue was an amazing story right off the bat. If you like comedy and mystery, get this one now.

I’m giving this issue 5 old-timey stars out of 5.
