“The Long Way Home”
Blackness with no stars. Where are the stars? The Vruzeox caretaker had been awoken early from his stasis pod only to be faced with a mystery. K’tolla was supposed to great him and give a status update on the Vruzeox Arkship. But he was no where to be found. Something must have happened along the way to their new home world, but with no stars to chart a position, they were doomed.
The spaceship’s engines were malfunctioning, that had to be the answer. Was it a dimensional shift in warp space? Maybe the Great Maker was angry with his people? Before the caretaker could find answers to the blackness, an alien covered in fire showed up outside the ship. First the flamed creature only showed itself outside near the ship’s bridge windows. Then the thing was at every porthole.
One hundred years later, a new caretaker has awakened from stasis. Where was the previous caretaker? Where are the stars? The Arkship has been stuck in a black void for over two hundred years! As the newest Vruzeox makes his way below decks to repair the ship’s engines, he becomes trapped in a corridor by some invisible forcefield. Days pass as the caretaker begins to starve. What is the ghostly figure appearing before him? Was this the monster who caged him? I would only take a week for this caretaker to die.
Who are the strange creatures attacking the Vruzeox Arkship? Why are the caretakers unable to see the stars? What the hell is a Collapsed isolated invariant hyperbole, anyways? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
Yep, you must love Ryan North for his outside of the box storytelling. I don’t want to spoil issue ten for anyone, so I will just say this is not your ordinary Fantastic Four adventure. I really felt bad for the Vruzeox at the end. I’m giving this quantum mystery five out of five starts. Get this one if you are looking for a unique space adventure.
