“It’s Him!”
Sturmbannführer Erich Kaempffer and his unit of SS Einsatzkommandos have arrived at the Keep. If evil was nowhere to be found at the five-hundred year old site, it had arrived today. The Major’s very first order was to round up twenty villagers and imprison them inside the keep. If one more German soldier dies Kaempffer promises twenty civilians would follow.
Bucharest – five days later, a squad of Iron Guard perform a raid on the villa of Professor Theodore Cuza. The old caretaker Alexandru had given up the Cuza family when drilled about an unreadable message scrawled in blood on a wall inside the Keep. The caretaker insisted the only person who could interpret the ancient writing was the head researcher from the University of Bucharest. The professor and his daughter Magda begin to pack for the cold weather of Transylvanian Alps.
Constanta – Romania, Gleaken had traveled across the Dardanelles but his destination was still far away. He had stopped to rest at the rustic village but not for long. A horse is what he needed and this area was famous for their livestock. Would the stablemaster accept gold coins in exchange for a mount? In war times gold is more valuable than any local currency. The mysterious traveler mounts up and races off into the early morning fog.
Who wrote the bloody message on the wall in old Slavonic? How did a collection of ancient text books come to reside at the mysterious keep? Have Woermann and Kaempfer’s men fallen to an ancient form of Moroi? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
So far, so good as issue two of ‘The Keep’ rolls along. I admit I was somewhat confused when writing my previous summary for issue number one. The art of Matthew Dow Smith is interesting but his character designs for Woermann and Kaempfer are very similar. In some of the panels the only way to differentiate the two is by the uniform colors. In certain cases, the inking and lack of color make it almost impossible to tell the two men apart. I had to go back and rewrite my review for the first issue.
In issue two, I was thrilled to find out the keep may house a vampire (or something along those lines). In the movie adaptation, the poor explanation of the entity really bugged me. Was the bad guy a monster, space alien, or something completely different. I’m hoping this comic book adaptation clears up the mystery. So far the talk is leaning towards vampires. I can’t wait to find out. I’m giving this issue four out of five stars.
