The Frankenstein Monster never seems to catch a break. I guess that’s what they call continuing drama! After Madam Marguerita and her cult trick our lumbering hero into resurrecting Dracula, Marvel wastes little time throwing two legendary monsters at each other’s throats. The battle between Frankenstein’s Monster and the Lord of Vampires takes center stage in The Monster of Frankenstein #9, and this is exactly the kind of monster mash I want from a 1970s Marvel horror comic.
The Marvel bullpen kicks things into high gear here, and John Buscema has rarely looked better. His artwork gives the confrontation the size and power it deserves. Dracula looks sinister even in his weakened condition, while Frankenstein’s Monster comes across as an unstoppable mountain of stitched flesh and raw muscle. Put these two horror icons in the same underground tomb, point them at each other, and let Buscema handle the rest. What more could a classic Marvel horror fan ask for?
I have nothing but high praise for this series. To me, The Monster of Frankenstein represents classic Marvel horror at its finest. It combines Gothic atmosphere, old-fashioned monster action, and the wild energy that made Marvel’s horror books of this era so much fun. If you enjoy Frankenstein, Dracula, or Bronze Age horror comics in general, get this one. You won’t regret it. I give this monster bash four out of five stars.
