Tom Holland’s Fright Night – Volume 01 Issue 03

Tom Holland’s Fright Night – Volume 01 Issue 03

My Rating

Rating: 3 out of 5.

“Dead By Dawn – Part 03”

The 55th anniversary showing of Bela Lugosi’s Dracula is about to begin. As fearless “Vampire Hunter” takes the stage, sounds of motorcycles erupt from the theater concessions stand at the front of the building. Heads turn in shock as several members of an outlaw biker gang crash through the theater doors and invade the stage area with fangs bared. Peter Vincent’s jaw drops as he recognizes the head vampire. Evil Ed? But how?

Elsewhere – at the Brewster house, Amy Peterson has decided to bite the bullet and make amends with her estranged boyfriend. She had distanced herself from Charlie for obvious reasons, but she still cared about him. They’re first reunion would be very familiar in more than one way.

As they begin to watch the latest episode of Fright Night in Charlie’s bedroom a strange scene begins to take place across the yards in the matching Dandrige house window. Two strange looking women and a man are in the middle of a menage tois. Charlie immediately turns his attention to the window. He swears he saw their eyes glow red!

How did Evil Ed survive being staked through the heart? Why is the Vampire Queen immune from the cross? Can Danny break Elaha’s Thrall on Charlie and Amy? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

My interest in this series is beginning to wane. I will set aside the diminishing art quality, as well as the annoying callbacks to 1980’s pop culture (as no kids referenced things like that), and I focus on the direction of the writing. If these books are supposed to be canon with the films, there will need to be some serious shoehorning to explain why Charlie and Peter would not remember these events by Fright Night Part 2 (1988)

Let’s talk Evil Ed. He was killed in the movie by a broken kitchen table leg. I think James Kuhoric is explaining this in the comic as the leg was made of pressed wood. Really? In the movie the table was clearly made of real wood. This plot twist was directly lifted from the movie Vamp (1986). Three frat boys visit a strip club managed by an ancient Vampire. One of the boys is turned, and eventually staked with a formica chair leg. The staked boy returns at the end of the movie (as does Ed here).

With Tom Holland’s Fright Night comic book being an annual release, I guess the producers have time to work things out. I’m in the process of collecting the Now Comics Fright Night series. I’m interested in seeing how those story arcs line up with this one. I hate giving poor ratings but I’m giving this issue three out of five stars.
