“The Danger Game!”
Day three of the change finds Jack being hunted through the sets of an abandoned movie studio. The beast is uncertain why the brash man calling himself Joshua Kane is hunting him, nor does he care. At this moment Jack’s primitive mind only knows panic, as Kane is using what werewolves fear most, silver bullets.
Animal instincts kick in as Jack dodges three more rounds from a Colt 45 Peacemaker revolver. With a quick leap and swing from a light pole, the werewolf darts down a side street towards a forgotten western movie set. The Irony is lost on the beast as false fronts of saloons and livery stables rush by him. One hundred yards away Jack’s pursuer raises a Winchester rifle and takes aim. If Joshua could only line up a clean shot it would be a quick kill.
Joshua Kane is no amateur to the hunt. He has tracked and killed animals all over the planet. There may have been a human or two trained in the cross hairs of Kane’s rifle as well. No one will ever know for sure. What is known is the size of Joshua Kane’s trophy collection. In professional circles the rumor is it rivals the likes of Kraven the Hunter.
Does the Russian have the head of a werewolf mounted to his wall? Joshua thinks not! Time to close in and secure his fame!
Will the Werewolf By Night escape the false landscapes and over inflated egos created by man? Has Lissa Russell discovered the secret which haunts her brother’s humanity? Can taxidermy be a career ending stressor? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
This issue is a bit odd but enjoyable for the most part. The story takes place shortly after Jack escapes from the Mad Monk. They really don’t say how Joshua Kane discovers Jack or how he knows about his werewolf side. I’m guessing Kane has been stalking Jack for a few issues beforehand? I’m not sure.
In any case I think it’s cool there is some competition for Kraven out there. The overall story is a bit underwhelming but Ploog delivers on the art. I’m going to give this issue of Werewolf By Night 3 out of 5 stars. Now back to the safari…
