My Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Saxon’s Story

On a farmstead near Cambridge – Ohio, three teenagers have just summoned the man named Saxon back to Earth using a Satanic ritual. How the arcane magic retrieved him from another plain of existence he will never know. The only thing occupying Saxon’s mind is his relentless quest to kill the Challengers and all those who have encountered the light.

Three weeks later in Chicago – Illinois, Saxon is approached by a sniveling corporate type representing the “Eye of the Dark Flame”. Their secret society has an offer to aid Saxon in the demise of the Challengers of the Unknown. All they need is his oath to the Aristos!

Will Saxon join forces to destroy the Challengers for good? Does the Dark Flame hold the origins of Saxon’s abilities? Is a blood sister powerful enough to stop the madness? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

This is the final issue in the 1997-1998 Challengers of the Unknown series. Just like the other three series in the “weirdoverse” line, low sales were blamed for the cancellation. Steven Grant addresses the readers in the letters from the readers section. He thanks the readers and reassures everyone DC Comics will try and bring back the team if possible.

Out of the four storylines (Book of Fate, Scare Tactics, Night Force, and Challengers), in my opinion, the Challengers of the Unknown had the best writing and variety of content. I loved Scare Tactics, but Challengers had that little bit extra. Steven Grant even wrote this issue with a solid jumping off point for a future series run. It’s too bad it had to come to an end, but I recommend the Challengers to those who love horror comics.
