Free Comic Book Day 2023 – Tom Holland’s Fright Night

My Rating

Rating: 3 out of 5.

“Welcome Back To Fright Night…”

Rancho Corvallis – Iowa, 1986, a full moon has filled the dark with a pale white light. It was a peaceful Midwestern summer until a recent string of murders brought an uneasy tension to the city. 8pm – A forty year old man runs at full speed towards a side street leading away from a downtown service station. Something has been stalking him from high above but it is too frightening to comprehend. The man trips on a curbside and plants face first onto the concrete sidewalk. He rolls onto his back but judging by his wide eyes it is too late. An enormous vampire bat lunges downwards towards the man, in seconds blood gushes from a fresh wound on his neck.

Six blocks away at a corporate book store chain, actor, writer, and self-proclaimed vampire hunter – Peter Vincent has just finished reading a chapter of his new book to a group of customers there for a signing event. Unknown to Peter, a group of reporters from various paranormal gossip magazines wait for their opportunity to ask leading questions. There is more money in misquotes than performing legitimate investigations. Thankfully the great vampire hunter has his publicist ready to deflect any unflattering inquiries.

What really happened to all those women last year near the Brewster residence? Does Peter Vincent believe the serial killer Jerry Dandrige was a real life vampire? Why did Peter’s publisher switch his book from non-fiction to fiction days before printing? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

Welcome to the return of Fright Night…sort of… for real. Apparently this free comic book day printing is a very small teaser for Tom Holland’s comic book version of his original novel from the 1980’s. I’m a huge fan of the original two movies so it was a no-brainer to grab this freebie. Unfortunately the book only shows a brief recap of events from the original book/movie, then cuts to Peter Vincent at a book signing event. A few pages of interviews are included, as well as a portion of text from the original novel. Not much else is expanded upon.

After some research I can’t tell if the series is getting released in June, or is being re-released. As a fan I will definitely add the books to my pull list. I have to give the Free Comic Book Day teaser a three out of five star review. I wish the editor would have opted for more details on where the story takes place. Just my opinion.
